तत्कालीन सीएस की सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद विधानसभा चुनाव से ठीक पहले राणा को सीएस का प्रभार दिया गया था, क्योंकि वह राज्य नौकरशाही में सबसे वरिष्ठ अधिकारी थीं। अगर राणा को एक्सटेंशन नहीं मिला तो राज्य सरकार को दोबारा वही कार्रवाई करनी पड़ सकती है जो विधानसभा चुनाव से पहले की थी। सूत्रों के मुताबिक, सरकार एमसीसी लागू होने से पहले इस मुद्दे को सुलझाने की कोशिश कर रही है, लेकिन वह केंद्र की मंजूरी का इंतजार कर रही है।
